Atlassian, the maker of JIRA used by project managers and developers worldwide, faced rapid growth that strained its on-premises JIRA instance—support.atlassian.com—creating scaling, maintenance, and availability challenges. The company needed a shared file system and a more resilient, easily scalable environment to handle increasing tickets, ensure high availability, and improve disaster-recovery capabilities.

Atlassian migrated JIRA Data Center to AWS, running application nodes on EC2 with Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing, using Amazon EFS for shared storage and CloudFormation templates plus CloudWatch for deployment and monitoring. The move delivered simple setup, consistent performance, improved uptime and disaster recovery across Availability Zones, faster scaling to meet customer demand, and freed engineering time to focus on product improvements.
