Case Study: GREE achieves seamless scaling for millions of downloads with Amazon Web Services (DynamoDB & EC2)

A Amazon Web Services Case Study

Amazon DynamoDB at GREE

GREE, a Japanese social‑networking and mobile‑game company, faced the challenge of delivering Another Eden with a backend that could handle unpredictable, massive launch traffic, support a long development cycle and frequent updates, and minimize operational overhead so a small engineering team could maintain stability and scalability.

GREE built the system on AWS using a KVS approach with Amazon DynamoDB as the primary store, an autosave client‑server model to simplify server logic, DynamoDB Streams feeding analytics pipelines (Kinesis/EMR/S3), and EC2 with Auto Scaling and load balancing. The result was seamless scaling during a launch of over one million downloads (and later 3M+), no resource‑related outages, minimal server‑side maintenance, lower costs, and integrated real‑time analytics.
