Amazon Adopts Amazon Aurora for Inventory Database

Amazon’s Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) team runs Inventory Management Services (IMS) that power warehouse processes for millions of items across massive fulfillment centers. IMS was constrained by on-premises Oracle databases that required heavy maintenance, slow and complex hardware provisioning, and limited scaling—creating a large operational burden while needing always-on availability and very short migration windows.

AFT replatformed IMS to Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL-compatible) using Amazon RDS and AWS Database Migration Service, automating the migration so a small team completed it rapidly with minimal downtime. The move cut scaling effort by about 95%, enabled reprovisioning in minutes instead of days, achieved a 100% migration success rate, improved high availability, and ensured more dependable, faster fulfillment for customers.
