A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Airtel, the Indian telecom and digital services company, was facing highly variable workloads on its Amazon EKS environment for Wynk Studio and related applications. Traffic could spike two to four times within seconds, driving up costs and causing playback delays, while the Kubernetes Cluster Autoscaler took about two minutes to add capacity. Airtel also struggled with complex node-group management, so it worked with Amazon Web Services to improve cost efficiency, availability, and operations on AWS.
Amazon Web Services helped Airtel implement Karpenter on Amazon EKS, along with AWS services such as Amazon EC2 Spot Instances and AWS Node Termination Handler. The new setup automated node provisioning, simplified scaling, and supported high availability for spiky workloads. As a result, Airtel reduced costs by 47%, lowered management overhead, and improved scale-up time and streaming experience for Wynk subscribers.
