AdRoll - Customer Case study

AdRoll is a San Francisco–based leader in retargeting with over 10,000 advertisers worldwide, handling hundreds of millions of user profiles and real-time bids. Its challenge was to support tens of thousands of writes per second across four regions and meet a hard 100‑millisecond latency cap for bidding while retaining the flexibility to add capacity instantly and automate operations.

AdRoll moved core systems to AWS—using Amazon S3 for 1.5 PB of storage, EC2 (30 core instances plus 200–1,000 variable instances and Spot capacity) with Auto Scaling, and DynamoDB for guaranteed low-latency reads and throughput—augmenting DynamoDB with a custom client and Apache Storm for fast global replication. The result: dataset replication in under 50 ms, the ability to serve more than 50 billion impressions a day, rapid customer onboarding and exchange integration, and lower operational cost and complexity versus running its own data centers.
