A Amazon DynamoDB Case Study
FanDuel is a fast-growing U.K. fantasy-sports platform and $1 billion "unicorn" with about one million active paying users. Because contests run every day and activity spikes dramatically in the hour before major games (handling roughly 300 edits and a similar number of new entries per second), the company needed highly elastic, highly available infrastructure — outages during that critical window would cause major revenue and reputational damage.
Since 2012 FanDuel runs on AWS, using S3, EC2 with Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon Aurora, ElastiCache (Redis), DynamoDB, EMR/Redshift and monitoring/security tools like CloudWatch, IAM and CloudTrail. Auto Scaling can expand compute groups up to ~20x within minutes (triggering at ~40% CPU), enabling near‑100% uptime, faster feature delivery by freeing DevOps from hardware ops, and reliable event support from AWS.
