To win real-time bids it needed instant scalability, automation, and guaranteed low-latency reads—syncing data for hundreds of millions of users across four regions, handling tens of thousands of writes per second, and meeting a 100 ms cap on bid responses.
AdRoll moved core systems and 1.5 PB of storage to AWS—using S3, EC2 (including Spot Instances and Auto Scaling), Apache Storm, and DynamoDB with a cookie/profile/timestamp key design and a custom client—to achieve consistent single-digit millisecond performance. The result: global data replication in under 50 ms, the ability to serve over 50 billion ad impressions per day, faster onboarding of customers and exchanges, and cost-effective, automated scaling that eliminated the need for additional datacenter resources.
