PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service, struggled with an incumbent CDN that caused streamed videos to fail to start or freeze and offered no way to measure performance degradation. PBS Interactive — already using Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3 — tested multiple CDNs and evaluated Amazon CloudFront as an alternative to solve their streaming reliability issues.

PBS migrated the majority of its video content into Amazon S3 and began delivering it via Amazon CloudFront within weeks. Using Amazon CloudFront’s distribution and invalidation features (and analyzing CloudFront logs), PBS reduced video streaming errors by about 50%, now delivers more than one petabyte of video per month, speeds testing and cache refreshes, and reports a more reliable viewer experience.
