Oasis.com, a Sydney-based online dating service with more than 9 million members, needed to streamline storage and delivery of 57 million member images and ensure low-latency, highly available real-time chat for a global user base. To reduce network latency for international users and free the team from heavy operations work, Oasis.com adopted AWS infrastructure and image delivery using Amazon CloudFront (backed by Amazon S3) along with AWS compute and database services.

Using Amazon CloudFront to distribute images stored in Amazon S3 and moving chat infrastructure to Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS, Oasis.com made its chat servers “set and forget,” scaled hosting from 1 to 10 virtual machines, and automated redundancy and backups (previous manual backups took 12 hours), cutting backup time and costs in half. Amazon CloudFront now delivers profile images almost instantly—around 60 milliseconds globally—dramatically improving member experience.
