A Amazon CloudFront Case Study
MovieStarPlanet, a Copenhagen-based social network for tweens with 10 million monthly active users and peaks of about 150,000 concurrent users, faced severe scalability problems: daily usage spikes and a massive TV-driven surge at Christmas 2013 exposed limits of its on‑premises infrastructure and slow hardware provisioning. To deliver global, secure distribution of billions of user-generated files and to scale more rapidly, MovieStarPlanet moved services to AWS and adopted Amazon S3 fronted by Amazon CloudFront.
Using Amazon CloudFront alongside Auto Scaling, Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, DynamoDB, and CloudFormation, MovieStarPlanet migrated its file-storage to S3/CloudFront and automated environment provisioning. The change let the company absorb a 30% increase in its user base, cut infrastructure costs by 20%, and reduce on‑call incidents from about five pager calls per week to one every two weeks, while speeding developer agility and feature delivery.
