A Amazon CloudFront Case Study
MLB Advanced Media wanted to capture and analyze every play in real time to reveal deeper insights into player performance, but needed a highly scalable, low-latency platform that could ingest large volumes of data from ballparks across North America and be shut down during the off season. To meet these needs MLB Advanced Media turned to AWS and used Amazon CloudFront (alongside other AWS services) to help deliver the solution, with CloudFront serving as the scalable edge layer for secured data APIs.
The implemented system streams high-frequency tracking data (ball position sampled 2,000 times/sec; player positions 30 times/sec), uses Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon ElastiCache, and AWS Lambda for storage, compute, caching, and serverless processing, and relies on Amazon CloudFront to deliver APIs at scale. The result: metrics are analyzed within milliseconds and broadcasters receive metrics and video within about 12 seconds after a play, the platform can support up to ~15 games in a single day, and it handles roughly 7 TB per game (≈17 PB per season), delivering new insights for fans, broadcasters, and teams.
