A Altoros Case Study
TapMap, a retail start-up, needed a web-based system to synchronize retailers’ POS systems with online accounts, provide daily stock and price updates, and let customers scan barcodes via free iPhone and Android apps to compare prices. The solution had to gather minute-by-minute statistics, display searches and scans on a real-time map, and enable retailers to forecast demand and evaluate new POS locations. ALTOROS was engaged to deliver this high-performance, scalable platform using a Ruby on Rails web system with MySQL (primary) and MongoDB (for statistics).
ALTOROS analyzed and re-architected the application, optimizing object relationships and the database structure to dramatically improve performance and enable near-endless scalability for real-time data collection and reporting. The resulting system supported real-time map visualizations, minute-level trend tracking and forecasting, and reliable mobile barcode lookups; TapMap’s platform performance was strong enough to help the company become one of three winners at the International EXPO 2011.
