Case Study: Science Warehouse achieves scalable performance and cost savings with Altoros' NoSQL workshop

A Altoros Case Study

Science Warehouse - Customer Case Study

Science Warehouse, a cloud-based procurement software provider, faced rapid growth and scalability limits with its Oracle Database Standard Edition and wanted to avoid costly migration or upgrading to Oracle Enterprise licenses. To evaluate alternatives, Science Warehouse engaged Altoros for a two-day NoSQL workshop and hands-on review of their Java application and database architecture.

Altoros recommended a polyglot‑persistence approach—keeping transactional data in Oracle while adding a document-store cache (e.g., Couchbase/MongoDB) for popular catalogue items and moving logs and price-history to column‑family stores (e.g., Cassandra/HBase). Altoros’s analysis exposed extreme load (one query ran ≈70 million times and the DB processed >9 TB), and after the workshop Science Warehouse’s engineers began prototyping the changes, gaining measurable performance and scalability improvements without a full rewrite or an expensive Oracle upgrade.
