A cloud infrastructure provider engaged Altoros to perform independent performance benchmarking of their Hadoop-based virtual machine clusters (Linux and a custom OS) to validate 1 TB TeraSort results and provide recommendations so a third party could be confident the system would handle the required big‑data load.

Altoros ran controlled TeraSort tests on 100 VMs—tuning block size, gzip/LZO compression, and mapper/reducer ratios, profiling with Starfish, and delivering an Apache Kafka–based policy protocol plus reports, scripts and recommendations. Altoros found Linux results similar with compression but LZO boosted the custom OS by 20%; Ubuntu VMs completed 1 TB in 15.65 minutes (noted as 12× faster than the customer’s prior result) and custom OS VMs finished in 6 minutes (2.75× faster), and provided guidance to improve stability and replicate the tests.
