Developing Methods and Algorithms to Determine a Geo Distribution of Cancer

The National Scientific and Practical Children’s Center of Oncology and Hematology engaged Altoros to address the challenge of mapping and analyzing the geographic distribution of childhood cancer across Belarus. Because pediatric malignancies are relatively rare and standard epidemiological methods were inadequate, the Center needed new statistical methods, algorithms and software to detect spatial and spatio‑temporal clusters of increased incidence for better prevention and early diagnosis.

Altoros developed statistical criteria for global clustering, algorithms for local clustering over specific time periods, and a software system to build and visualize these clusters. The resulting solution enabled the Center to single out regions and communities with elevated incidence of leukemia, carcinoma and other malignant tumors, providing actionable high‑risk maps that support earlier diagnosis and targeted preventive efforts—potentially saving many children’s lives.
