Developing a Method to Improve the Accuracy of Melanoma Stage Diagnostics

The National Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology engaged Altoros to improve diagnosis of metastatic lesions in regional lymphatic nodes for melanoma patients. Facing a prior diagnostic accuracy of only 58.2% and the need to avoid unnecessary regional lymphadenectomy (and its attendant complications and longer hospital stays), the center sought highly sensitive statistical decision procedures based on tumor and patient indicators.

Altoros implemented a generalized discriminant analysis–based solution and developed a software system that classifies patients into three groups (require lymphadenectomy, do not require it, or need further examination). Altoros’ approach raised diagnostic accuracy to over 83%, reduced the number of surgeries and post‑operative complications, and was rolled out in Belarusian oncologic dispensaries—helping to save hundreds of patients’ lives.
