Building an IoT System to Connect a Fleet of Medical Carts

The customer, a human-centered design company that builds standing desks, charging systems, workstations and mobile carts, faced the imminent termination of their Xively-based IoT platform for a fleet of 100 medical carts. To migrate the system and extend firmware functionality without major device changes, they engaged Altoros to redesign the backend and preserve existing firmware behavior.

Altoros implemented an end-to-end IoT solution on Google Cloud Platform using Cloud IoT Core, Cloud Functions, Cloud Pub/Sub, Firebase and BigQuery, enabling real-time messaging and dataflow while avoiding massive firmware changes. The delivered solution connected 100 medical carts, brought database query times within the 3-second requirement, and added firmware alerting for errors, low battery and updates—demonstrating clear operational and performance improvements under Altoros’ implementation.
