Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam accelerates impact analysis with Altmetric across 25,000 DOIs

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) needed to help its researchers demonstrate both scholarly and societal impact for purposes like grant applications and strategic planning. The challenge was finding a single, comprehensive source for non-academic impact data, such as mentions in media, policy, and clinical practice. To meet this need, VU's Research Intelligence team turned to Altmetric and its Altmetric Explorer platform.

The solution involved enriching the university's publication data with Altmetric metadata to create interactive dashboards. Using Altmetric Explorer, the team could precisely filter and analyze research attention by geography, cancer type, and source type (like news or policy documents). A key result was the ability to showcase how research influences clinical practice through new clinical impact data. Altmetric provided a unified source for all these measures, accelerating impact analysis and giving university leaders valuable intelligence for strategic decision-making.
