Using Altmetric Explorer for Institutions to analyse attention around medical publications

A major pharmaceutical company, which publishes around 500 peer-reviewed articles annually, sought to better understand the online engagement and reach of its research publications. Their challenge was to analyze which publications received the most attention, identify where that attention was coming from, and discover any trends to inform future strategies. To achieve this, they turned to Altmetric and utilized its Explorer for Institutions platform.

Using Altmetric Explorer, the team analyzed a large sample of publications, tracking online mentions across social media, news, policy documents, and other sources. The solution revealed that attention peaked between one month prior to and two months after an article's assignment to a journal issue. They found articles in journals with a strong social media presence, like the New England Journal of Medicine, received the most attention, with primary and secondary manuscripts being the most prevalent types. This data provides the company with actionable insights to understand their audience reach and identify areas for improvement in future publication plans.
