The University of Manchester needed an efficient way to provide its researchers with evidence of the broader societal impact of their work, particularly for requirements like the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The university also sought to monitor outreach activities with a system that offered qualitative insights, not just quantitative data. To meet this challenge, they partnered with Altmetric to implement the Altmetric for Institutions platform.

The solution from Altmetric consolidated online attention data into a single source, providing at-a-glance summaries and, crucially, links to the full context of each mention. This allowed the university to easily identify high-impact research and track its coverage, including over 335 policy document references and thousands of monthly mentions. Altmetric enabled faculty to source qualitative evidence for funding applications and helped academic engagement teams form more effective outreach strategies, driving further researcher engagement.
