The University of Cambridge sought to efficiently gather evidence of the broader impact of its research, particularly for exercises like the UK's Research Excellence Framework. The challenge was a slow, manual process of finding and amalgamating data from many sources, with a specific concern about missing evidence of research influencing public policy. They turned to Altmetric and its Altmetric for Institutions product to address this.

Altmetric implemented its platform, with Cambridge acting as a development partner to refine features like tracking mentions in policy documents. The solution enabled the team to quickly uncover and collate evidence of research impact. Results include tracking over 400 references in policy documents and 131,191 total mentions to date, with the platform also facilitating internal collaboration and benchmarking against peer institutions.
