A Altmetric Case Study
The University of Cambridge needed a faster, more comprehensive way to gather evidence of the wider impact of its research for exercises like REF, while also helping academics understand how their work is perceived externally. Altmetric and its Altmetric for Institutions product were used to address this challenge, especially by surfacing evidence from a wide range of sources that was difficult to assemble manually.
Altmetric worked closely with the University of Cambridge as a development partner for five months, refining the platform and adding policy document tracking, subject filtering, and network analysis capabilities. As a result, Cambridge can now quickly identify research mentions in policy documents and other sources, with more than 400 policy references found to date, alongside 131,191 mentions overall, 8,073 mainstream media articles, and over 800 online mentions in the last month alone.
