Queensland University of Technology tracks 30 million downloads and research reach with Altmetric

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) sought to demonstrate the broader influence and engagement of its STEM research beyond traditional citations. Liaison Librarian Gabrielle Hayes needed a solution to align with national recommendations to consider non-academic impact. The university turned to Altmetric, initially using its widget, to track online attention for publications.

Using Altmetric Explorer, QUT librarians implemented monthly reports highlighting the most-discussed research. This solution revealed significant online activity unknown to researchers, including timely policy citations. The results were highly positive, increasing faculty engagement and leading to proactive collaborations with communications teams. Altmetric provided unique data that enhanced the library's reputation and created new projects to promote research across the university.
