A Altmetric Case Study
MIT Press, one of the world’s leading university presses, wanted to create a new range of ebooks built around its most influential research. To do this, the press needed a way to combine editorial judgment with quantitative evidence on which articles were most popular, most cited, and most discussed online. It turned to Altmetric and the Altmetric Explorer to support that effort.
Using Altmetric Explorer, MIT Press identified high-impact articles by tracking mentions across online media, blogs, Wikipedia, social networks, Mendeley, and F1000, then combined those insights with expert opinion and other bibliometrics to curate themed collections. The result was the BATCHES series: the first three collections were published in about four months, 9 titles are now available, and usage and feedback have been very positive, with MIT Press continuing to expand the series.
