Michigan Publishing rolls out Altmetric across 3 publishing programs

Michigan Publishing, part of the University of Michigan’s research library, needed to demonstrate the value and broader impact of their diverse publishing outputs—including open access journals, books, and an institutional repository—to their publicly-funded institution and to authors, especially in disciplines where traditional metrics like Impact Factors are lacking. They partnered with Altmetric to address this challenge.

The solution involved integrating Altmetric data across their platforms, starting with journal articles and later rolling it out to their open access book program and Deep Blue repository. This provided authors and the publishing team with a granular view of how research was being discussed and reused online. Altmetric enabled Michigan Publishing to successfully showcase the influence of their work, leading to positive internal feedback, strategic insights for outreach, and satisfied authors who actively use the data to track engagement.
