Case Study: Cambridge University Press showcases publication impact with Altmetric

A Altmetric Case Study

Preview of the Cambridge University Press Case Study

Cambridge University Press uses Altmetric badges since 2012 to track publication impact

Cambridge University Press, the world's oldest university press, sought to establish and demonstrate the impact of its new digital-first publishing format, Cambridge Elements, as well as its broader academic publications. Their challenge was to showcase engagement and influence for this innovative hybrid product, especially before traditional metrics like citations became prevalent, and to provide authors and readers with a wider range of impact data beyond citations and the Impact Factor. They turned to Altmetric to address this need.

By implementing Altmetric badges and data across their Cambridge Core platform and for the Cambridge Elements series, Altmetric provided a solution. Cambridge University Press uses the data to highlight popular research themes for commissioning, demonstrate visibility to prospective authors and indexing partners, and drive author engagement by showing online conversations around their work. The results include enhanced status for the new Elements format, informed editorial and sales strategies, and progress toward their commitment to diverse impact metrics, as evidenced by their use of Altmetric data in discussions with libraries and for internal performance tracking.
