A Altibase Case Study
SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile service provider with over 20 million subscribers, faced performance and operational problems with its customer authentication running on Microsoft’s Active Directory/LDAP: slow authentication under high concurrency and painfully long data replication (four to five days for 17 million customers). To address this, SK Telecom adopted Altibase’s hybrid database architecture for its authentication system.
Altibase’s hybrid solution keeps hot user data in memory and cold data on disk, enabling much faster transaction performance and simpler replication. With Altibase, authentication became four times faster, replication dropped from days to about two hours, schema changes fell from one month to three hours, SK Telecom moved about 20 GB between in-memory and on-disk tables as needed, and overall database-related CPU/system use and TCO were significantly reduced (around a 70% TCO reduction).
