Case Study: SK Telecom achieves 3x throughput and lower TCO with Altibase

A Altibase Case Study

Preview of the SK Telecom Case Study

SK Telecom - Customer Case Study

SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile service provider with over 20 million subscribers, faced stability and performance issues with its Oracle-backed Short Message System (SMS). The Oracle database could only handle 300–500 TPS, driving high license and maintenance costs and jeopardizing reliable, real-time message delivery. SK Telecom switched from Oracle to Altibase, adopting Altibase’s in-memory database for its SMS platform to meet real-time processing needs.

Altibase’s in-memory solution enabled real-time detection, analysis and data replication, cutting disk I/O and boosting throughput roughly threefold versus the legacy on-disk system. Transaction capacity rose from 300–500 TPS to 1,000–1,700 TPS (with a maximum of 15,000 TPS), SMS became available 24/7 for over 20 million users, and resource usage fell to one third, producing lower TCO and reduced expenditures for SK Telecom.
