A Altibase Case Study
SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile operator, faced growing billing delays, rising DB-related TCO and unpaid negative balances because its legacy mainframe/DB2 batch-based rating system could not support real-time prepaid charging. To solve this, SK Telecom engaged Altibase and deployed Altibase’s in‑memory database as the front end to Oracle for its Real Time Rating System (RTRS).
Altibase implemented an in‑memory/Oracle hybrid (using Altibase’s OraAdapter and active‑active HA replication) and moved processing to an open UNIX platform, enabling real‑time, per‑second rating. The new Altibase solution made the system 5.3× faster, raised throughput from ~150M to 450M calls/day while cutting resource utilization to ~50%, eliminated revenue leakage and negative balances, and delivered per‑second billing that saved customers about $14.5M annually, while lowering TCO and improving customer satisfaction.
