Case Study: Samsung Electronics achieves lower total cost of ownership and high-performance MES with Altibase

A Altibase Case Study

Preview of the Samsung Electronics Case Study

Samsung Electronics adopts Altibase for refurbishment system. Altibase replaced Oracle

Samsung Electronics, a global manufacturer of semiconductors, home appliances and smartphones, needed to lower operating costs for its refurbishment factories that process customer returns and warranty repairs. Databases were one of the largest expense drivers (over 50% of the application stack), and Oracle’s high license and maintenance fees were unsustainable, so Samsung Electronics sought an alternative database for its Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and replaced Oracle with Altibase.

Altibase was chosen in 2018 and implemented via its hybrid in-memory/disk architecture, Migration Center and shared‑nothing replication to meet MES high-throughput needs. Altibase’s in-memory performance and query optimization sped data processing, migration from Oracle was straightforward, hardware and licensing costs fell by eliminating the need for separate in-memory/on-disk systems and Oracle RAC, high availability was achieved, and Samsung Electronics reported performance improvements of over 100% on scalar subqueries — delivering lower total cost of ownership.
