A Altibase Case Study
POSCO, a global leader in steel manufacturing, faced an obsolete legacy DBMS that caused data redundancy, poor performance and missed delivery deadlines across its Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Process Control System (PCS). To integrate MES and PCS and support real-time sensor data from molten-metal transport trains at its five blast furnaces, POSCO selected Altibase’s in-memory database (chosen in 2011 after benchmark tests against Oracle TimesTen and IBM SolidDB).
Altibase implemented an in-memory DBMS with built‑in replication (active‑standby HA) and an OraAdapter for Oracle integration, enabling a rebuilt train control system in about five months. The solution raised throughput from 400 TPS to 2,500 TPS, processed 40,000 bits/sec from 4,000 sensors, eliminated redundant data, reduced failure points, improved on‑time delivery and scalability, and delivered projected savings of over $300,000 per year; Altibase has remained reliable in production since May 2011 and was later chosen again by POSCO for blast furnace monitoring.
