POSCO chooses Altibase over Oracle for its MES and lowers database-related TCO by over 60%

POSCO, a Fortune Global 500 leader in steel manufacturing, faced the challenge of upgrading IT for its aging blast furnaces to support a new Manufacturing Execution System (MES). It needed a high-performance, reliable database capable of real-time collection and analysis of furnace data (temperatures, gas pressure, lining leaks) with microsecond response times and over 100,000 transactions per second, while also reducing rising database costs—so POSCO selected Altibase’s in-memory/hybrid database solution.

Altibase implemented its hybrid in-memory database in 2018, using Migration Center to move data from Oracle and leveraging built-in replication, ODBC/JDBC integration, and a parallel receiver-apply technique for high-performance replication. The deployment took three months (two for development, one for tuning) and delivered real-time monitoring and faster fault detection, straightforward migration and integration, and improved replication performance; most notably, Altibase lowered POSCO’s database-related TCO by over 60%.
