Hewlett-Packard - Customer Case Study

Hewlett-Packard (HP) faced a critical performance bottleneck while developing its OpenMCM application performance monitoring (APM) system: it needed extreme real-time throughput (minimum 30,000 TPS) plus large, persistent storage. Traditional on-disk DBMSs were too slow and Oracle TimesTen’s POC delivered only ~20,000 TPS and caused data loss, threatening to shelve the project. HP chose to embed Altibase’s hybrid in-memory/disk database to meet these demanding speed and storage requirements.

Altibase implemented a hybrid architecture combining in-memory tables for hot data and on-disk tables for historical data (including the proprietary MOVE DML), removing the need for separate in-memory and on-disk systems and lowering TCO. The Altibase-powered OpenMCM now delivers 45,000 TPS, enables real-time analytics, and simplified administration; measurable impacts include a 20% reduction in development time for customers like SK Securities and a capacity-planning improvement from 10 engineers/1 month to 1 engineer/1 week. Altibase’s solution allowed HP OpenMCM to be adopted by 22 enterprise clients while cutting costs and operational overhead.
