Case Study: Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) achieves real-time nationwide power monitoring and 10× faster data processing with Altibase

A Altibase Case Study

Preview of the Korea Electric Power Corporation Case Study

Altibase enables KEPCO to build a web-based SCADA system to monitor and respond to incidents in real time

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), South Korea’s largest electricity producer, faced serious performance bottlenecks after integrating eleven SCADA systems on Oracle databases. Oracle could only deliver two data batches per day, preventing real-time delivery of terminal data to the control center and hampering KEPCO’s ability to detect regional demand, temperature anomalies, disasters and other issues needed to manage power distribution.

Altibase implemented its hybrid in-memory/disk database solution (adopted by KEPCO in 2013), keeping hot data in memory and gradually migrating to disk to enable continuous updates and non-stop service. As a result, Altibase enabled real-time collection and analysis, allowed nationwide real-time power analysis and distribution, delivered data processing 10× faster than Oracle, and reduced KEPCO’s TCO by 33.3%.
