Using Weather Data to Predict Retail Sales

Vantage Data is a retail-focused analytics firm that helps retailers plan inventory and staffing more proactively. Facing the challenge of predicting short-term sales swings driven by weather—so store managers, planners and HR can prioritize shipments, promotions and staffing—Vantage needed to ingest large-scale sales and weather datasets, map weather to store locations, normalize category sales, and produce actionable forecasts across thousands of stores.

Vantage built Alteryx Designer workflows and runs scheduled jobs on Alteryx Server in Azure, using Snowflake to process billions of rows of sales data and JSON weather history/forecasts, geospatially mapping stations to stores and training linear regression models. Outputs are delivered via Tableau dashboards and Alteryx Gallery apps for category and regional managers; within weeks clients deferred unnecessary markdowns, reduced stock-outs during peak weather events, and optimized product space and staffing based on weather-driven demand signals.
