Using Predictive Analytics to Optimize Equipment Utilization

Swift Transportation Company, a Phoenix-based full truckload carrier operating across the US, Mexico and Canada, needed to maximize equipment inventory utilization across three dimensions—mileage, time, and the combined miles-and-time metric—to drive incremental savings (greatest when optimizing both miles and time together).

Using Alteryx (with Tableau for visualization), the analyst built a predictive workflow based on linear regression (R² = 0.966) after cleaning and integrating miles/time data from multiple sources, then simulated 12-month projections and dynamically generated outputs. The automated workflow not only produces utilization forecasts and equipment-intervention recommendations but also cut routine processing time (e.g., a monthly accounting task) from hours to automated runs; the team is exploring ARIMA and expanded classification models to further improve accuracy.
