Sainsbury’s Tackles Integration with Alteryx

Sainsbury’s, one of the UK’s leading grocers, faced a complex integration challenge after acquiring Home Retail Group (Argos and Habitat): merging property and sales data, deciding which Argos stores could continue trading, redesigning regional store boundaries during rapid growth, and producing pre-formatted Excel reports for stakeholders. The project required combining disparate data sources (Salesforce, Azure flat files, and internal systems) and speeding up a previously manual, weeks-long mapping and reporting process.

Using Alteryx, the team cleaned and merged property and sales datasets, automated region design by generating non-overlapping polygons around stores, and implemented a Blob Input/Output workflow (with a small batch file and Email tool) to copy Excel templates, populate them, and distribute reports. The solution enabled scheduled, automated reporting and rapid iteration—region redesigns now run in 27.8 seconds—and delivered more than 250 Argos stores into the Sainsbury’s network in two years, with Argos data in Salesforce within a week, sales forecasting within a month, and combined business reporting within six weeks.
