MeshPower, an NGO startup in Rwanda, partnered with Javelin Group and Alteryx for Good to solve a critical site-selection problem for off-grid solar micro-grids. With only 51% of households having electricity (37% via the national grid and 14% off-grid) and an ambition to scale beyond their initial 70 sites, MeshPower needed a data-driven way to identify locations that would maximize people and households reached, nearby infrastructure (schools, clinics, refugee camps) and local economic viability.

Using Alteryx’s spatial analytics, Javelin built an Analytic App that tests and ranks every village in Rwanda with configurable weightings for population, housing, infrastructure and income. The solution produces clear reports and outputs for decision making, enabling MeshPower to prioritize high-impact sites, improve operational viability, move toward gross profitability, increase sustainability, and scale their electrification impact across Rwanda.
