Honda used its long-running Internavi telematics network to help build a new “fourth pillar” of business by turning massive, location-based driving data into public insights. The challenge was extracting and analyzing large volumes of spatial data stored in a cloud data lake and making those insights broadly usable for purposes like traffic management, disaster response, city planning and tourism.
Honda partnered with Classmethod to build an AWS-based analytics foundation, moving processing from EMR to Athena, using Alteryx for spatial data preparation and blending, and Tableau for visualization. The solution enabled faster, more agile analysis (often by a single analyst), lowered technical barriers, unlocked new public-facing use cases and revenue opportunities, and made Honda’s telematics data practically useful for governments, planners and the general public.
