A Alteryx Case Study
Inmarsat, a London-based leader in satellite telecommunications, faced unreliable and incomplete internal geospatial data—caused by things like SIM and terminal swaps—which hampered reporting, market intelligence and even life-critical search-and-rescue operations. The BI team needed richer, validated location features to accurately identify vessels and aircraft and to detect commercial fraud.
Using Alteryx spatial tools the team matched internal position records with external AIS and community-sourced aircraft data (linking IMSI, MMSI, IMO and tail numbers), applied Find Nearest and spatial joins, automated the workflow with a macro and connected directly to BigQuery. The solution cut processing from five days to one, produced matches for 50% of records (plus 25% more identified), flagged 3% as incorrect and 22% as unmatched for further investigation, and delivered market intelligence and fraud-detection capabilities while saving Inmarsat more than $100K annually in external data costs.
