SmartDrive Systems’ Analytics team faced a growing data-integration bottleneck when running its Fuel Savings Analysis (FSA) to quantify fuel savings after installing video event recorders on commercial vehicles. The team’s legacy approach (R scripts, SQL stored procedures and SSIS) was code-heavy, slow, hard to maintain, and required 2–3 hours of analyst time per customer because the tool had to be run one customer at a time. When Marketing asked for a company-wide FSA for an upcoming press release, the existing process could not scale to meet the request.
The team rebuilt the workflow in Alteryx (adding an embedded R decision-tree step), querying the warehouse for vehicle-week fuel and distance data, computing expected fuel use in the absence of SmartDrive, and publishing results to Tableau Server. Scheduled to run weekly, the end-to-end job processes the entire customer base in under 30 minutes, enabling Account Management to self-serve reports and Marketing to publish a company-wide result (average savings of $4,903 per vehicle per year). The automation eliminated routine analyst effort, improved pilot conversion and revenue, and increased customer satisfaction.
