University of Sheffield trials in-cell custody animations in late 2024 with Alternative View Studios

The University of Sheffield's Centre for Criminological Research, led by Professor Layla Skinns, needed to communicate complex information about rights and entitlements to vulnerable detainees in police custody. They engaged Alternative View Studios to create a series of accessible educational animations and a supporting leaflet for this research project.

Alternative View Studios developed four animations covering key custody aspects, working with the university, police forces, and a neurodiversity consultant to ensure accuracy and accessibility. The solution was trialled on in-cell video screens in 2024, successfully providing detainees with essential information to make more informed decisions. The digital guide is now being made available to other police forces across England and Wales for wider rollout.
