Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, a nonprofit rehabilitation healthcare system in Nebraska, faced the challenge of finding a flexible electronic health record (EHR) system that could meet the unique documentation needs of its diverse post-acute care services, including inpatient rehabilitation and long-term acute care. Their previous paper-based system was inefficient and failed to adequately support the different workflows of their nurses and therapists, which was critical for patient care and reimbursement accuracy.

To solve this, Madonna partnered with Altera Digital Health to implement its Allscripts Sunrise platform, which they customized to create the nation's first transdisciplinary, rehabilitation-driven EHR solution. This included automated scoring for key patient assessment instruments. The results were significant: a 4.8% decrease in IRF-PAI admission scores, a 0% functional scoring error rate in nursing, a 1.3% increase in Case Mix Index, and 100% compliance in submitting therapy charges with documentation. Altera Digital Health's solution enabled more accurate reimbursements and streamlined workflows, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care.
