Improving medication safety with electronic prescribing

Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), an acute district general hospital in London, sought to improve medication safety and digitize its patient records. To address this challenge, they partnered with vendor Altera Digital Health to implement the Allscripts Sunrise platform, specifically its Electronic Prescribing and Medication Administration (EPMA) module.

Altera Digital Health implemented a methodical, ward-by-ward rollout of the EPMA solution, which standardized prescribing to evidence-based practices through features like syndromic prescribing. The result was a nearly 100% adoption rate of electronic medication charts, significantly improving safety by eliminating handwritten prescriptions and automating dose calculations. The vendor's solution also served as a successful model for optimizing workflows to be rolled out across the larger hospital trust.
