Case Study: UPMC achieves interoperable, connected care with Altera Digital Health dbMotion

A Altera Digital Health Case Study

Preview of the UPMC Case Study

A decade of interoperability success

UPMC, a major integrated healthcare enterprise, was challenged by the need to connect its vast network of disparate health IT systems, including multiple electronic health records from vendors like Cerner and Epic, to improve clinical decision-making. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor Altera Digital Health to co-develop and implement the dbMotion™ Solution, an interoperability platform designed to harmonize data across the organization.

Altera Digital Health's dbMotion solution created a unified, patient-centered record by aggregating data from 78 different source systems. The implementation provided clinicians with seamless access to comprehensive patient information, which directly changed care decisions for two out of three providers. The results were significant, with 14,000 users accessing the clinical record 125,000 times per month, leading to reduced duplicate tests and more efficient care delivery across the UPMC system and the broader western Pennsylvania community through the ClinicalConnect HIE.
