Rijsdijk-ICT, a Dutch managed service provider based in Raamsdonkveer and Hoogeveen led by Cris Rijsdijk, faced a critical incident when a customer’s Hyper‑V server was hit by CryptoLocker ransomware. The attack deleted entire volumes on local NAS devices and put 18 TB — millions of files — at risk during an already difficult COVID‑19 period, forcing a full network rebuild and ruling out paying the attackers.

Using Altaro VM Backup’s offsite backups (implemented via distributor CloudLand) and a 3‑2‑1+ strategy, Rijsdijk-ICT rebuilt virtual servers, recreated domains/users, replaced drives and restored all data from the offsite copy. The recovery took a few days but resulted in zero data loss, saved the customer’s business, and reinforced the importance of robust offsite VM backup practices.
