Falkirk Council - Customer Case Study

Falkirk Council, the 11th largest unitary authority in Scotland serving over 157,000 residents, needed a reliable way to perform virtual “bare metal” restores for its high‑school Hyper‑V clusters to minimise downtime and avoid the complexity of restoring many VMs from traditional file‑level backups. Its existing backup product only supported standard file/folder backups and required an expensive upgrade to deliver full VM restore functionality, putting pressure on constrained budgets.

After trialling Altaro VM Backup, the council found a cost‑effective, fast‑to‑deploy solution that supports full virtual bare‑metal restores, granular file restores, sandbox test restores and running VMs from offsite locations. The tool enabled straightforward recovery of complex services (like SharePoint VMs) and successfully rescued a high‑school deployment during an iSCSI array failure without data loss, delivering both operational resilience and clear cost savings.
