Wisconsin Precision Casting Corporation - Customer Case Study

Wisconsin Precision Casting Corporation (WPC), a family‑owned investment casting and industrial pumps manufacturer, faced the challenge of reducing costs and material usage for a regenerative turbine pump cover while preserving strength, performance, and casting quality. Altair supported the effort through its solidThinking products, using Inspire for structural shape optimization and Click2Cast for casting and solidification simulation.

Using Altair’s solidThinking Inspire to identify loads and optimize the geometry and Click2Cast to validate filling, gating and solidification, WPC redesigned the cover and altered ingate orientation/size and sprue layout to increase parts per pour. The result was an 8% mass reduction with maintained strength and stiffness, improved process efficiency (including reduced degating and manufacturing time), and minimal porosity confirmed by x‑ray inspection.
