VTT Presents an Organic, Lightweight Hydraulic Valve

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the largest multidisciplinary research organization in Northern Europe, set out to design an ideal hydraulic valve for customer Nurmi Cylinders that would be lighter, provide better fluid flow, and minimize leakage risk. To explore additive manufacturing solutions, VTT used Altair software for design optimization and then enhanced the 3D-printable geometry with Materialise 3-matic.

Leveraging Altair’s optimization tools to refine topology and performance and Materialise 3-matic to prepare the organic geometry for printing, VTT produced an organic, lightweight hydraulic valve with improved flow characteristics and reduced leakage risk for Nurmi Cylinders. The Altair-enabled design optimization delivered a lighter, better-performing component ready for additive manufacture, demonstrating measurable gains in weight reduction and fluid-flow efficiency.
