Virtual Design and Testing of a Medical Autoinjector, Project Overview

Nolato, a Sweden-based global provider of injection-molded parts, developed Nolava — a complex electro-mechanical medical self-injector — in collaboration with partners including Altair. The challenge was to virtually validate device operation, misuse scenarios (forceful bending or opening of the loading tray), drop performance, rib-structure design and overall manufacturability of a fiber-reinforced plastic housing before committing to physical prototypes.

Altair supplied optimization technology and simulation capabilities to run co‑simulations of injection operation, misuse and drop tests, investigate alternative rib structures, and perform molding and assembly simulations to spot and mitigate production issues. Altair’s work validated robust design alternatives, identified and resolved likely manufacturing problems, and materially reduced the risk of production failures while ensuring the Nolava met performance and manufacturability objectives.
